UK company to construct New Ugandan Hoima International Airport | Uganda 8th Convention UK

Colas UK is a UK subsidiary of French civil engineering firm, Colas Group, and local construction company SBI. This   project, a Transport infrastructure firm will be supporting the construction of a new airport in Kabaale following a largest ever UKEF loan to an African government.

Tanya Jeffrey (Turner & Townsend) and Lars Peter Jensen, Area Manager, Uganda Colas Limited will be sharing an investor’s perspective and sharing best practices in investing in Uganda at the 2018 UK-Uganda Trade and Investment Convention (UCUK), which will take place on the 15th of September at the Troxy Arena-London, under the main theme “Driving Trade, Unleashing Investment and Enhancing Economic Development: The Gateway to Ugandan Markets”.

UK Export Finance’s largest ever loan (€270 million) to Uganda government will help finance the construction of a new international airport in the Kabaale region of Uganda. This will become the country’s second international airport, opening access for the delivery of equipment, materials and services. By enabling vital work to be carried out on large-scale infrastructure and energy projects planned in the area, the airport will have significant long-term benefits for the country’s developing economy and energy independence. A second phase of development is planned to improve the airport’s capacity to support tourism and international trade at a later stage.

This is the first major project in Uganda supported by UKEF, which offers UK-government backed loans to overseas buyers in support of UK exports. UKEF’s finance will help support work on the construction of the runway, taxiway, cargo terminal and other necessary infrastructure to be undertaken by the UK arm of infrastructure firm Colas UK.

Director of Strategic Projects at Colas UK, Carl Fergusson, said, with huge untapped natural resources, rapid urbanization and attractive demographics, the requirement for investment in infrastructure to support continued regional development is clear, and this aligns well with the outward looking international element of the Colas Ltd strategy which seeks to expand our activities in East Africa. Colas are delighted to have been awarded this significant project.

Colas is an award-winning business, delivering sustainable solutions for the design, building and maintenance of global transport infrastructure. It is part of the world-leading

Even with uncertainty on the construction of an oil refinery in Hoima, Uganda is proceeding with plans for the construction of a second international airport.

The Kibaale International airport will be situated adjacent to the site of the proposed oil refinery for which government in 2011 acquired 29 square kilometres of land across 13 villages in Hoima.

The airport will facilitate the transportation and movement of logistics and personnel in the oil industry during the upcoming development and production phases.

The Hoima airport is also part of the Civil Aviation Authority master plan – which also includes the development of airports in Arua, Pakuba and Kasese – aimed at stimulating the air transport industry and facilitating travels to support tourism and trade in the country.
