Business and investment is fundamental to the Ugandan UK Convention. This is the second UK Convention and we are in the initial phase of forging a cordial working relationship with the government as Diaspora investors. Ugandan governments create the rules and frameworks in which businesses are able to compete against each other. From time to time the government will change these rules and frameworks forcing businesses to change the way they operate. Business is thus keenly affected by government policy.
This is one reason why we have a big delegation representing selected government departments attending this year’s convention and they rightly, proportionally dominate most of the discussion panels.

The main panel: ‘Opportunity Uganda’, will be addressed by The Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament. She is not a business woman but she is a pillar in overseeing government policies and we, the Diaspora rely on visionary politicians to help us ensure that good policies enacted to facilitate business in Uganda by creating a level playing field as is the case for other foreign investors.
The discussion panel will be moderated by Joel Kibazo of JK Associates, a public affairs and communications consultancy offering services specialising in Africa. And panellists will include;

• Mr. Marshall Alenyo, Director Uganda Immigration

Lynda Chalker, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey will be invaluable to this panel. Lady Chalker is a Member of the Global Leadership Foundation, an organisation which works to promote good governance around the world and Africa Matters Limited, an independent consultancy which provides advice and assistance to companies initiating, developing or growing their activities in Africa

Hon. Daudi Migereko, Minister of Lands, Housing & Urban Development will give a general oversight of the housing sector and opportunities that exist therein.

Revenue is an important asset for Uganda and the more Ugandans in the Diaspora transact business with the country, the more taxes will be collected. In this case, we invited Jolly K. Kaguhangire a Commissioner  at Uganda Revenue Authority to discuss among other matters, queries relating to taxes in Uganda that affect the Diaspora.
The Private sector is also the driver of any economy and Mr. Gideon Badagawa the Executive Director of Private Sector Foundation Uganda will enlighten us on issues and opportunities in the private sector.

The panel will be discuss and interact with delegates on various issues including; Investment climate, Diaspora skills, micro investment by the Diaspora, dual citizenship, special tax rates for the Diaspora and a liaison person for the Diaspora.

The increased inflows of remittances amounting to US$ 2 billion is an indication that a lot more can be harnessed from the Diaspora engagement.” Baroness Chalker. I believe forums like the convention can mobilise the Diaspora to engage in productive ventures which can increase both the remittance to and Diaspora deposits in Uganda.
