We are extremely excited and honored to hear that the Hon Janet Museveni Minister for Karamoja and MP for Ruhaama SW Uganda will be joining us at this year’s Ugandan Convention in London on 15th September 2012.
Having the First Lady attend the convention is exciting for us, because the theme of this year’s Convention is Sustainable Development and as Minister for Karamoja, she has oversight of the least developed region of Uganda. Whilst Karamoja has had International NGO’s working in the district for several years the district remains desperately poor and its people literally starving. This is one of the key points for discussion at the Convention and as well as the role of the diaspora in ending such poverty.
Secondly, the First Lady is also behind some of the most successful local community initiatives to help women and children as well as those affected by HIV and Aids, such as Uganda’s Women’s Efforts to Save Orphans (UWESO). Although philanthropy is well understood amongst the diaspora, some don’t always know where to start nor where help is needed the most. We hope to draw out these points at the convention and that the First Lady will share her experience in this area.
